Iconic Irish Recording Studio to open its doors to the public.

Dublin-based and world-famous Windmill Lane Recording Studios, where everyone from The Rolling Stones to U2 has created music, opens to the public with a new Visitor Experience.

On 20th February 2020, Windmill Lane Recording Studios (WLRS) launched a unique new visitor experience. President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins was our guest of honour along with key music industry personalities. Guests were treated to a surprise musical performance by Paul Brady and Donal Lunny in the iconic Studio 1.  This visitor experience will provide visitors through a guided tour of the studios where famous musicians recorded. They can also observe the music recording and production process.

Visitors will learn about the prolific history of Windmill Lane Studios from its very beginnings to the present day. Since U2 placed it on the world map in 1978, its services have been in great demand, which led to the relocation in 1990 of its facilities to a larger space in an Art-Deco  protected structure: the former electrical power station for the tramline depot on Ringsend Road. Since then, some of the artists that recorded here included Kate Bush, The Rolling Stones, The Cranberries, The Spice Girls and more recently Lady Gaga, Ed Sheeran, Westlife, The Script and Hozier.

This one-hour tour will explore where some of the world’s most iconic songs and albums were recorded. The soundtrack for The Commitments film and the Riverdance album were recorded here.

“It is wonderful to see the reaction of visitors when they actually get behind these iconic doors and learn about the long history of the building and the growth of both Windmill Lane Recording Studios and the music industry in Ireland.  We have recorded so many of the albums that visitors grew up with, and the songs their children and grandchildren are growing up with, so it’s a very special experience to stand where, and learn how, they were recorded.” Naomi Moore, Chief Executive Officer, Windmill Lane Recording Studios.

Located in Dublin’s Docklands, this working recording studio preserves Ireland’s modern music history and will share its story with tourists, music lovers and fans of some of the most influential international musicians and is set amongst the hub of the world’s leading technology companies European headquarters.

In addition, tour visitors will receive an historical summary of the Ringsend area – from the times of Oliver Cromwell to the 1916 Easter Rising and will outline the buildings involvement in the old Dublin tramlines to its present status.

“As a founder of Windmill Lane Recording Studios, I’m delighted that visitors will get a chance to experience the story of the studios and to find out what goes into making the many great albums that have been recorded there.  Windmill Lane Recording has been a major part of my life for so many years and I’m very happy that it still lives on and goes from strength to strength. This is a great opportunity to experience a wonderful piece of Irish and International music recording history.” Brian Masterson, Founder of Windmill Lane Recording Studios.

“Fáilte Ireland is delighted to support the Visitor Experience iconic Windmill Lane Recording Studios.  The evolution of this attraction which, by its artistic and authentic nature, compliments the tourism offering within the Docklands and adds to the unique offering for Dublin City.  Overseas visitors look for compelling experiences and we are confident the experience at Windmill Lane Recording Studios will be a huge draw for both domestic and international tourists.  We are working on developing the potential of the Docklands area as a vibrant tourist location and we believe the visitor experience at Windmill Studios will be central to this as it embodies one of the key themes of cultural innovation that has always been inherent in the Docklands area,” Paul Kelly, CEO of Fáilte Ireland.

Note: this is still a working studio and tours will be subject to availability.

Steve Osborne Masterclass at Windmill Lane Recording Studios

World famous and multi-platinum selling producer and mixer, Steve Osborne, visited us and delivered a Masterclass to the Music Production and Music Technology Degree and Diploma students from Pulse College.

Steve began his career in the 90’s dance scene as part of one of the most legendary remix teams with Paul Oakenfold, working with amazing artists including Massive Attack and The Happy Mondays. Steve then segwayed into recording studios, engineering and producing for acts such as U2, Elbow, Doves, Suede, Placebo, KT Tunstall, PJ Harvey and Gregory Porter.

Steve took the students at Pulse College through the process of producing and mixing a track for mainstream daytime Radio. Steve was employed by Decca Records A&R team to take the jazz recording ‘Hey Laura’ by Gregory Porter and remix it with the aim to get the track on the “A” playlist for BBC Radio 2. The stems given to Steve by Decca were analysed and discussed with the students, while Steve demonstrated his editing techniques in Protools (based Beat Detective and Tempo analysis) of how to take a free-time live recording and hard quantise the tracks to the Protools grid in preparation for his production and remix.

Check out this recent interview with Steve in MusicTech where he talks about his career in more detail and how his time here with us at Windmill Lane Recording Studios encouraged him to get more involved in educating the next great generation of audio engineers and music producers……

Gavin James Dropped into Studio 1!

Irish singer-songwriter Gavin James recently dropped into Studio 1 here at Windmill Lane Recording Studios and gave us a few verses from his massive hit Always!  Gavin is an amazing songwriter and won the Choice Music Award Song of the Year for Bitter Pill in 2015 and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

He began working on his debut album back in 2015 with producers Fraser T. Smith and Cam Blackwood. These guys have worked with some of the biggest artists in the industry: Adele, Stormzy, Sam Smith, George Ezra, Florence and the Machine……. So it’s not surprising that Bitter Pill went down so well with the public upon its release.

The past few years have been a whirlwind for James touring right across the world, performing to a global audience of over one million people.

In 2018 James released the single “Always” from his second album Only Ticket Home which has reached over 50 Million streams to date and is now platinum in several countries including a No.1 in Brazil and is one of the top 100 Shazamed songs in the world.

We can’t wait to hear more new material from Gavin but until then here’s a little clip of him trying out our grand piano……

Westlife at Windmill Lane Recording Studios

Westlife are back with a bang and their new single “Better Man” hit the top of the Irish Spotify and ITunes charts only one day after its release. Better Man, is the second single from the band’s 11st studio album, was written by Ed Sheeran, Fred Gibson and Steve Mac and the video was filmed here at Windmill Lane Recording Studios. Lochlainn McKenna did a wonderful job directing the video.

The official video premiered on Westlife’s You Tube and Vevo accounts on the 29th March 2019 and has been a huge global success since its release.

We want to wish the band every success with their latest release and up coming tour. For anyone who’s been lucky enough to get their hands on a ticket we know it’s going to be a super show!

Rhiannon Giddens at Windmill Lane Recording Studios

Rhiannon Giddens, lead singer, violinist, banjo player and founding member of Carolina Chocolate Drop, an American blues and country band, spent some time in Windmill Lane Recording Studios continuing her exploration of world music to record for her new album There Is No Other. She collaborated with Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi and producer Joe Henry.

The album’s title is a reference to the marginalising practice of “othering,” which includes, but is not limited to, discrimination and prejudice on the basis of group identity. It explores how music and sounds have moved from the African and the Arabic world to influence musicians throughout Europe and America.

“It’s all about movement, for both of us. . . movements of human beings and how we affect each other,” Giddens said in a recent Irish Times interview.

“If you just look at our range of instruments, where they’ve come from and how they’ve travelled across the world, it’s pretty amazing. The way that both of us approach music is very similar because we’re both educated about where the music is coming from. But when it comes to playing, we’re both just playing what we feel.”

Among the songs that were recorded by Giddens and Turrisi during five days here at the studios is “I’m on My Way,” quite a striking song that finds both freedom and an uncertain future in the image of a “little bird… stretching out to the shimmering, shaking blue.”

The original songs written by Giddens for the LP are joined by interpretations of classics tracks including Ola Belle Reed’s “I’m Gonna Write Me a Letter,” and Oscar Brown, Jr.’s “Brown Baby,” as well a traditional Italian song, “Pizzica di San Vito.” The album is quite stripped back with little editing and overdubbing. The two musicians play the most of the instruments, with Rhiannon singing and playing banjo, violin and viola, whilst Francesco plays the piano, accordion, drums, lute, banjo, daf and colascione.

There Is No Other, is set for release on the May 3rd on Nonesuch Records.

hozier Nina Cried Power st 1

Nina Cried Power has a soulful gospel feel to it and the collaboration with Staples works fantastically well. Hozier’s fans have been anxiously awaiting new material and we’re pretty sure they’re going to love the new tracks. With a full-length album expected in 2019 the new EP should certainly whet the fans appetite.

Studio One here at Windmill Lane Recording Studios provided the perfect backdrop for Hozier and Mavis Staples to record this great video performing Nina Cried Power……

Studio Two was also used while Hozier was with for this second video….

Hozier’s new EP is out now on Spotify and well worth a listen…. Enjoy!!!
